Sat. 30 July '16 - Massively depleted Hill hold Salfords to draw.
The Hill faced the weekend with an astounding 26 members unavailable for a variety of reasons. As such the 2nd Team match had to be conceded and the 1st Team that travelled to Salfords 1sts was much changed. However, that didn't stop Taz De Reuck taking 4/50 as the host made an overly safe 246/8 off 45 overs. With a clear understanding of the task in hand, skipper for the day Neil Overington (left) weighed anchor and defiantly carried his bat for the full 45 overs for just 18 runs! He was abley supported by Chris Ely (36), Dave Burke (21) and Dan Bishop at the end (12*) to repel the Salfords attack and secure the draw with 102/3. Whilst points weren't earned the points denied of the hosts may have gone a long way to ensuring The Hill's place in the top division. |
Sat. 23 July '16 - 1sts capitulate to Tadworth's opening bowlers.
The 1sts had a day to forget as they hosted Tadworth 1sts. After being asked to bat following yet another lost toss, openers Dave Harms (left, 20) and Andy Burke (10) put on a solid 36 for the first wicket, but that was as good as the innings got, as both were removed in quick succession and the rest followed with nobody else making double figures in a paltry total of 70 in less than 20 overs and only 2 Tadworth bowlers being required. Dave Burke did manage to take 3 wickets in the reply, but the visitors were never in danger and made the target with 6 wickets and 48 overs to spare. |
Sat. 23 July '16 - Late hitting from Lintott snatches winning draw for 2nds at Albury.
The 2nds' improving record continued at Albury. After being asked to field in the heat a solid effort from all concerned ensured that Albury felt compelled to go the full 48 overs and posted 226 all out with Matt Camp (3/42) and Jonny Prior (2/20) the pick of the bowlers. Reaching that target was always a big ask in 42 overs, particular with the hosts' impressive openers. However Dave Foot (59) and Ricky Newman (34) ensured that a losing draw was always achievable. However Jack Lintott (left, 45*) had other ideas as he bludgeoned his runs in the last 8 overs to snatch a winning draw and with it 14 valuable points. |
Wed. 20 July '16 - 'Jacks win over Sabres sets up all Hill semi final in SSM Cup.
The Lumberjacks hosted Slinfold Sabres in the SW Surrey Midweek Cup quarter final on Wednesday in a repeat of an earlier league stage match, it was a much closer affair this time around though. After electing to bat the visitors got off to a solid start but their middle order was swiftly dislodged by Matt Camp (left, 4/10) and Richie Bowers and Mark Swallow stiffled the tail to restrict them to 123/9. The hosts' response stuttered throughout with wickets falling regularly but Bowers and Swallow came together for the 6th wicket to effectively get them over the line despite a daunting 30 being required off the last two overs. The victory sets up an intriguing semi final against the Club's other side in the competition, The Sloggers, with the date of the match to be confirmed in due course. |
Sat. 16 July '16 - 1sts get back to winning ways at Nutfield.
The 1sts recorded their first win since the start of June on the road to Nutfield 1sts on Saturday. After winning the toss and electing to bat, the visitors made a poor start with the early loss of the top three, but Richie Bowers, Andy Burke (both 26) and Mark Read (left, 48) rebuilt the innings and a late 28 from Mark Swallow meant a total 180 all out at least gave them a chance. The probability looked less likely as the hosts began with a 50+ opening partnership, however Bowers removed both openers along with 3 others whilst Swallow and Stuart Martin took 2 wickets a piece to rip through the middle order and Owen Bartlett took his first 1st team wicket as they secured a hard-fought 29 run win and 27 points. |
Sat. 16 July '16 - 2nds continue their hex over Woldingham Village to record first win in 9.
The 2nds' last victory occurred at Woldingham in May and The Hill ensured they doubled up at home and with it move themselves out of the relegation zone. After being asked to bat, the hosts got off to a swift start courtesy of Simon Ely's brisk 52 but the innings stuttered a bit with his dismissal until skipper Matt Camp (40*) anchored the innings and supported late hitting from Russell Ely (47 from 17 balls) and Dan Bishop (12 from 7 balls) to post an imposing 230/8 off 44 overs. The visitors responded with lusty blows of their own early on but the storm was weathered and wickets were chipped out by Ian Marshall (left, 3/16) and Bishop (2/33) with the help of some exceptional fielding particularly from Neil Overington, and Dave Foot. It wasn't long before a 103 run victory was confirmed along with 30 valuable points. |
Sat. 9 July '16 - 1sts stop the rot with losing draw to start second half of the season.
The 1sts welcomed Capel to The Hill as the season passed the halfway point and they elected to field looking to end the run of recent defeats. Although 3 relatively early wickets were taken a strong 4th wicket partnership with 50s from both Stephens and Costello meant that the visitors were able to add some carefree runs towards the end to set 247 to win off 45 overs. After openers Ben West and Dave Burke were dismissed the hosts responded with a strong partnership of their own between Luke Palmer (left, 57) and Richie Bowers (51*), however once the former departed the innings didn't get going again and the visitors restricted the chase to 199/7 and a losing draw for The Hill. |
Sat. 9 July '16 - 2nds come close to securing an unlikely win after a below par batting performance.
The 2nds made the short journey to Ockley on Saturday and after being asked to bat continually struggled to put any meaningful partnerships together and despite some flashes of brutal hitting a procession of wickets meant that they were eventually dismissed for 112 after only 33 overs. The old ball was used to commence the reply and Russell Ely prized out 2 early wickets, then Jack Lintott (2/45) and Matt Camp (left, 5/30) brought the hosts to 111/9 but they managed to squeeze the two runs needed for victory. The match was equally notable for the league debuts of 14 years olds Matt Forrester, Toby Dawson and Tom Cox who joined Tom Barker in the youth contingent and we are all hopeful they will continue to feature as the season progresses. |
Sat. 2 July '16 - 2nds come unstuck against a much enhanced Horsley & Send side.
The 2nds were back in action after the previous week's cancellation and were looking to reach the halfway stage of the season on a high. They welcomed a Horlsey & Send side that was unrecognisable from the previous week and were asked to bat on an initially damp pitch. They did well to post a competitive 196 all out from 44 overs, mainly as a result of quick early runs from Simon Ely (34, left) and a first 50 for Garry Bartlett. Garry's son Owen was the stand-out performer of the reply as he took 3/16, but there was little else to cheer around that and the visitors reached the target with 10 overs and 6 wickets to spare. |
Sat. 25 June '16 - 3 poor results in a row as 1sts fall to Old Woking 1sts in rain affected match.
The 1sts paid the price for valiantly getting a game played on Saturday when others took an abandonment as they fell to another heavy defeat. They were put into bat by the visitors and at one point were 8/5 on a difficult wicket that the bowlers exploited well before the match was reduced to 55 overs. They eventually 72/9 off their 30 overs, but this was never likely to prove challenging enough once the sun came out. Dave Burke and Richie Bowers (left) did take a wicket each early on to offer hope but a bludgeoning 3rd wicket partnership ensured an 8 wicket win with 5 overs to spare. |
Sat. 18 June '16 - Another day to forget for the 1sts, this time at East Horsley.
The 1sts suffered a second comprehensive defeat in a row, this time at the hands of East Horsley. After being asked to bat on a somewhat understandably unprepared wicket it was always going to be tough to set a good target but a catalogue of poor shots mixed with two examples of poor running meant that a mere 76 was posted off just 29 overs with Luke Palmer (left, 22) being one of only two batsmen to reach double figures. The hosts made light work of the chase although Mark Swallow and Dave Burke did take a wicket a piece but it couldn't stop a cruise to victory with 52 overs in the bag. |
Sat. 18 June '16 - 2nds not quite up to the standard set by the league leaders.
The 2nds were always in for a tough test against the clear league leaders, but weren't help by losing a key toss and being put in on wicket that had seen a lot of rain over the week. Simon Ely battered 30 and Ricky Newman (left) hit an unbeaten 50, but there was little else to compliment them in an all out total of 145 off 39 overs. The visitors rarely looked in trouble although Simon and Chris Ely took a wicket each around one for Ian Marshall, but it wasn't enough to prevent a simple chase inside 30 overs, although other results meant little damage was done to The Hill's league standings. |
Sat. 11 June '16 - Bad day for 1sts as North Holmwood cruise to victory.
This was very much a day to forget for the 1sts. After being put into bat all looked quite rosy to begin with as they passed 100 with only 1 wicket down as Dave Harms (44) and Luke Palmer (left, 83) were amongst the runs. However, from there they slipped to 214/9 off 45 overs where they declared. Despite a number of changes, the bowling from all concerned never clicked and chances were not quite going to hand. Stuart Martin took the lone Holmwood wicket, but the visitors were never in danger and they claimed a comfortable 9 wicket victory with 9 overs to spare. |
Sat. 11 June '16 - 2nds thwarted by the weather as they swarm all over slow Salfords.
The 2nds were left frustrated from their visit to Salfords as after being put into bat the hosts somehow took 3 hours to bowl just 42 overs, SImon Ely (left) top scored with 47 and there were 30s from skipper Ricky Newman and Jack Lintott in an all out total of 210. The speed of the hosts' batting was no different and although Owen Bartlett (3/18) and Simon Ely (3/20) had them toppling at 103/8 after 37 overs, the rain came to deny the visitors the further 9 points they probably would have claimed with the victory as they had to settle with a winning draw, but 20 valuable points. |
Wed. 8 June '16 - Lumberjacks breeze past Sabres to all but secure passage to next round of SSM Cup.
The Lumberjacks posted their second sizeable victory in the SSM Cup league stage, this time over Slinfold Sabres who defeated the Sloggers 4 weeks earlier. After electing to bat, openers Ben West and Marc Cobby set an early pace before the latter departed to a mistimed drive. The former would eventually perish in the 40s but an unbeaten innings from Luke Palmer and substantial knocks from the Burke brothers ensured an imposing 228/3 was posted off their 15 overs. The visitors' reply never really got going and ultimately came apart in the middle overs as Jonny Prior (left) took 4 wickets and Matt Camp 2, to leave them floundering at 123/7 from their allotted 15 overs, meaning a 105 run win. |
Sat. 4 June '16 - Bowers' 5fer makes light work of Ockham.
The 1sts made it 4 wins in a row and with it rose to 2nd in the table with a comfortable 30 point win at bottom of the table Ockham. After electing to field The Hill were made to wait for the initial breakthrough, but once it came opposition wickets fell regularly, mainly to skipper Richie Bowers' off spin, which claimed impressive figures of 10-5-14-5 and resulted in a meagre total of 131. Despite having 50 overs in which to get them the response remained positive and thanks to an anchoring 63* from Marc Cobby (left) and a solid 42 from Andy Burke, the target was reached with 18 overs to spare. |
Sat. 4 June '16 - 2nds bounceback with draw against high-flying East Horsley.
The 2nds got over their humbling defeat at Wonersh the week before and rose out of the relegation spots with a draw that could easily have been a win against 2nd placed East Horsley. After electing to bat a solid 218/9 was posted off the maximum 48 overs by the hosts, underpinned by 79* from skipper Dave Foot (left). The response saw regular wickets taken, with 4/47 from Jack Lintott, but the 10th wicket proved elusive, despite everyone's best efforts, and the visitors managed to hold on at 193/9 off their full 42 overs and The Hill had to settle for a losing draw but still 11 valuable points. |
Sun. 29 May '16 - Despite a valiant effort, The Hill fall in first round of NVC again
The Hill bowed out of the National Village Cup at the first attempt for the third year in a row, this time at Frensham. Extensive unavailability meant the visitors were far from at full strength but on a small, fast ground good work from Clive Bulpitt, Matt Camp and Richie Bowers (left) managed to limit the damage to 305/7 off 40 overs. The reply looked positive to begin with as Mark Read (66) and Luke Palmer (43) put on 78 for the 2nd wicket but, despite a further 87 from Bowers, the wickets fell regularly and the visitors could only get up to 257/9 in response. A spirited effort but not quite enough. |
Sat. 28 May '16 - Luke Palmer shines as 1sts dominate Salfords
The 1st XI hosted Salfords I who had yet to post a score under 200 this season and therefore were not to be underestimated. After being put into bat and seeing Marc Cooby dismissed for 26, Dave Harms (76) and Luke Palmer (left, 103) were the lynchpins of an imposing 260/5 total from their 40 overs. After losing two very early wickets to Mark Swallow, Salford consolidated and looked to threaten, but between Richie Bowers, Dave Burke and Dane Palmer, the middle order was eventually removed and Swallow came back to finish their innings at 154 all out and secure 30 points. |
Sat. 28 May '16 - Seconds slump to big defeat at Wonersh
The 2nd XI suffered a very humbling defeat against a strong Wonersh side at the weekend. After being put into bat they did manage to get off to a decent enough start reaching 16 quickly, but then the wickets began to fall all too regularly. Jack Howick (left) top scored with 17 before hitting his own wicket following a bouncer, and only Matt Camp and Jonny Prior made double figures in a poor total of 80 all out. Despite an early wicket in the second innings by Camp, Wonersh bludgeoned their way to the total in just 67 balls and completed a 30-0 rout. Here's to a better showing next week. |
Sat. 14 May '16 - Marc Cobby hits Club's first century of season in Nutfield rout.
The 1sts put their opening day set-back behind them in style on Saturday as they took apart visiting Nutfield 1sts. After electing to bat and setting a solid foundation in the first 20 overs, opening pair Ben West (80) and Cobby (left, 121*) put on 185 for the opening wicket. Luke Palmer followed West with a swift 44 to see a total of 274/1 posted off the 40 overs. Nutfield began with a solid opening partnership of their own with Chatfield scoring 72, but once that was broken wickets fell at regular intervals. Skipper Richie Bowers (4/43) lead the way as the hosts were eventually dismissed for 198. |
Sat. 14 May '16 - Foot leads the way as 2nds bounce-back at Woldingham.
The 2nds got their first ever win at this level away to Woldingham thanks to a much improved batting performance. Simon Ely (42) scored at pace again to get The Hill off to a good start, but it was Dave Foot (left, 82) who was the cornerstone, ably assisted by Neil Overington (38), of the 198/10 with 3 balls left spare. Skipper Matt Camp (2/29) and Jonny Prior (2/25) ensured the Woldingham reply stuttered from the start as they removed the top 4 for just 38 between them. This paved the way for Russell (2/37) and Chris Ely (3/34) to clear the middle order and tail, ably assisted by 15 year old debutant George Hughes, as a 44 run win was secured with 3.2 overs to spare. |
